About Reversi

What Reversi is

Reversi is the classic game of flanking discs, played on an 8 by 8 board. Black moves first. You place a disc so that it traps one or more of your opponent's discs in a straight line, and every trapped disc flips to your color. Tamaki's Reversi keeps those rules and adds a computer opponent, pass-and-play, and private online rooms.

Objective

Finish with more discs of your color than your opponent. Every legal move has to flip something. You cannot drop a disc on an empty square just because it is open. If a placement does not sandwich an opponent's disc, it is not a move.

How a round works

A sandwich can run along a row, a column, or a diagonal. The line must be unbroken, with your new disc at one end and one of your discs already on the board at the other. Every opponent disc in that line flips. One placement can flip more than one direction at the same time. If you have no legal move, you pass. If neither player can move, the game ends, even if empty squares remain.

How scoring works

There is no separate point track. The discs on the board are the score. A full board holds 64 discs, and the count can swing late, because one move in a long line flips every disc in it. When the game ends, the player with more discs wins. An even split is a draw.

Number of players

Reversi is a two-player game. You can play the computer at Easy, Medium, or Hard, pass one device between two people, or share a room. In an online room the guest plays White.

Strategy

Corners are the strongest squares, because a disc in a corner cannot be flipped back. Edges are safer than the squares that touch a corner. Taking a square beside an empty corner often hands that corner to your opponent on the next move. Early on, having fewer discs can be an advantage. The player who still has moves at the end is the one who fills the board.

Local and online play
