About Ochos Locos

What Ochos Locos is

Ochos Locos is Tamaki Technologies' take on crazy eights. It uses one standard 52-card deck and no jokers. You match the card in play, change the suit with an eight, and race to empty your hand.

Objective

The first player to play every card wins the round. The match is decided by the points left in everyone else's hands, and the lowest total wins. Before the first deal, choose a set number of rounds, a race to 100 or 300 points, or an open tally with no finish line.

How a round works

Each player is dealt seven cards. The highest card leads the first round, with aces high, and a tie is redrawn. After that, the player who went out leads the next round. On your turn, play a card that matches the suit or the rank, or play an eight. If nothing fits, draw one card. Play that card if it works, or keep it. An eight is wild, and you name the suit that must be played next. A two makes the next player draw two. A jack skips. A queen reverses the direction of play. Going out on a two, a jack, or a queen wins immediately, and that extra effect does not fire. When one card is left, call ¡Locos! If you forget, another player can call "Didn't say ¡Locos!" before the next play, draw, or keep, and you draw two cards. House players make that call only when you are the only human at the table. If the draw pile runs out, the discard pile is shuffled into a new draw pile and the top card stays.

How scoring works

Points are counted on the cards still in your hand when someone goes out. An ace is 1. Cards from 3 through 10 count their face value. A king is 10. A two, a jack, or a queen is 20. An eight is 50. Those leftovers are added after every round, and the lowest running total wins the match you chose.

Number of players

Ochos Locos seats two to six players. With two players, a queen skips instead of reversing.

Strategy

An eight is the card you most want to play and least want to be caught holding. Use it to move the suit toward cards you can follow, not just to get it out of your hand at random. Save a two, jack, or queen for the last play when you can, because going out on one of them cancels the penalty. Call ¡Locos! the moment you are down to one card.
